Not everyone is aware of the many many changes made to the E Type during the first production year. Albeit some do know the special "flat floor" which refers to the flat straight floor panel. Moreover, I would say, the E Type has been developed on the road and underwent a especially during the first 12 month an evoltion only very are aware of.
Obviously, the closer the car is to the first as more valuable it is for the collectors. But not only the number matters, more and more we are looking at the original features and when they have been changed in the production.
Jaguar had a Bulletin, listing every change of part and the number of cars when appeared first time. So, we can say when and what has changed. Needless to say, that the modern reproduction parts do not serve the very limited number of parts which have often been only a few hundred produced and then substituted for various reasons.
Apart from the most obvious changes, the "flat floor" hundred of other parts have been changed of which the most important to me was the change of the FHC body shell after the roughly first 1.500in spring 1962. That for me makes the early FHC to most interesting and desirable car of all E Type.
I know you would argue about the OBL (outer bonnet latch) but the change to the inner bonnet lock was not that significant than the redesign of the early FHC body.
Here on the right you see a pair of original early battery hold down clamps. The hook has a flat part almost of 2/3rd of the total lenght. Later hooks had only the lower section flat.
Very important for the purist are the distingtiv butterfly wingnuts. Not obtainable anymore.
